The under 12’s are the foundation of county badminton and Sussex County Junior Badminton (SCJB) are excited to announce a new and innovative approach to engaging and developing young players across the county, whilst also ensuring badminton coaching is easily accessible to players throughout the county.  SCJB is continuing to focus on the participation and development of these young players, as the cornerstone for all future County badminton.  To this end, we are engaging with the Junior Clubs and Coaching groups across the county to form a stronger and more productive relationship between the county, clubs and coaches, for the benefit of the players and parents.

The aim is to provide a more accessible and cohesive coaching platform for the U12 players across the county, supporting the junior clubs and coaches, whilst also providing as many opportunities as possible for enhancing the players’ development and matchplay experience.

  • Amazing Coaching Support for U11 Badminton Players
  • U11s working hard at badminton development coaching
  • Fabulous U11 badminton talent

For the 2017-18 season, the U12 squad will train weekly at Portslade on Saturdays. There will be a U12 team in the Shires League playing against 6 other counties and hoping to repeat the success of last season when our U12s reached the national finals.

The U14 age group forms the basis of competitive badminton across the country and where Sussex County Junior Badminton first engages in the inter-County competition known as the “Shires League“.

The structure for the U14’s will provide high quality development coaching for the highest performing players across Sussex, within a competitive and focused environment.  The County squad structure has been devised to provide targeted development for the top performing players, with clear and open avenues for developing players across the County to challenge for places in the squad.

The U14 sessions will focus primarily on technical skills development to ensure a solid base set of badminton skills are carried forward into the older age groups.  This will build on the foundation established through the U12 age group to ensure U14 players are able to perform in competitive situations.

The structure for the U16’s will provide high quality development coaching for the highest performing players across Sussex, within a competitive and focused environment.  The County squad structure has been devised to provide targeted development for the top performing players, with clear and open avenues for developing players across the County to challenge for places in the squad.

The U16 sessions will provide more balance between technical skills development and matchplay tactical instruction.  This builds the players’ ability to analyse game situations and understand how to break down opponents to deliver improved outcomes.  This approach will continue to build on the foundation established through the U12 and U14 age groups to further enhance the U16 players’ ability to achieve positive results in competition.

The structure for the U18’s provides high quality development coaching for the highest performing players across Sussex, within a competitive and focused environment.  The County squad structure has been devised to provide targeted development for the top performing players, with clear and open avenues for developing players across the County to challenge for places in the squad.

The U18 sessions will be focused on matchplay practice and tactical instruction.  This builds on the players’ established technical ability to ensure they have the tactical knowledge and understanding required to enable them to perform at the highest level possible.  This approach will continue to build on the foundation established through the younger age groups to deliver groups of players able to achieve positive results at the U18 and senior county levels.

For the 2017-18 season, a course of group lessons will be held for U14/U16 players who show potential but were not selected for the county squad. These lessons are defined as follows:

  • The format will be a course of a number of lessons facilitated by SCJB
  • Players on the course are not “county players”, do not wear county shirts and should therefore be eligible for non-county badminton competitions
  • Players on the course will be constantly assessed by a SCJB coach/official for immediate selection into county squad
  • Players selected for the course should initially be of a minimum standard where they show the potential to reach county squad within the forthcoming season
  • Players on the course will be expected to continue training elsewhere with a BE registered coach (on a group or individual basis)
  • At the end of the course, players not selected for county squad will be encouraged to enter Rising Stars and trial for the next season
  • Players who are not selected for the course but are looking for additional training will be encouraged to attend an additional club session and/or private coaching
  • All players on the course are strongly encouraged to enter the Sussex Junior Restricted
