Sussex U20 v Hampshire U20 on 17 Nov 2018 at Horsham
With just two girls’ doubles left to play, Sussex needed one more win to secure overall victory over Hampshire. The girls knew exactly what was required and secured not one but two wins to ensure that Sussex won the match 12 – 8. These two wins by Molly Thomson with Bea Noakes and Robyn Haysom with Amy Radford epitomised the fighting spirit and will to win that the U20’s have demonstrated so well this season.
Of course, you can’t win them all, but this Sussex team has shown what it means to battle to the very last point. Thomas Wood and Amy in the mixed lost in three but never scored less than 19 points in a set. Scott and Molly also took their mixed to three, but won out in the third.
In the boys’ singles, Ben Smith fought out an epic three setter, again never scoring less than 19 points in a set, but lost the final set 20 – 22. Will Pieckelon got off to a slow start losing the first set in his singles but battled back in the second, losing so narrowly at 20 – 22. In the girls singles Robyn lost the first set to 19, but wore her opponent down to win in three.
In the boys doubles Tom Barham and Thomas lost one match narrowly but secured victory in the second. Will and Ben came so close to winning one of theirs, losing narrowly 19 – 21 and 20 – 22.
So there were wins in the mixed for Tom B and Robyn, Scott and Molly and Ben and Bea; in the boys’ singles for Thomas W; in the girls’ singles for Robyn, Molly and Amy; in the boys’ doubles for Thomas W and Tom B and in the girls’ doubles for Robyn and Amy (2) and Molly and Bea (2).
Thanks to all the parents who came to support the team and to the players for their enthusiasm, determination and great team spirit.
