Kent U20 10 - 10 Sussex U20

7th February 2019 - 10:00 am

Sussex U20’s achieved a fighting draw against a strong Kent side away at

Thamesview on Sunday 17th February. This was their fourth and final match of the

season and they did fantastically well to maintain their unbeaten record.

The mixed matches were shared, with Sussex’s wins coming from Ben Smith and

partner Bea Noakes, while Will Pieckelon with Robyn Haysom also won in three. The

boys’ singles ended in a clean sweep for Kent, although Will took his opponent to

three hard fought sets. Sussex almost reversed things in the girls’ singles taking

three out of four matches with wins for Robyn, Molly Thomson and Bea.

With the eight doubles matches to play, Sussex were trailing by seven games to five.

They needed to win six of the remaining eight to win or five to draw. The first round

of doubles saw them level the match taking three of the four games. Will and Ben

secured a great win as did all four girls, Robyn with partner Amy Radford and Bea

with Molly.

There was everything to play for in the last four matches. Thomas Wood and Tom

Barham won their boys’ doubles comfortably, while Kent took the other one. Kent

took the first girls’ doubles meaning Sussex could not win the match, but they could

secure a vital draw by winning the last girls’ doubles. It was not looking good when

Robyn and Amy lost the first set to 15. But these two girls do not know the meaning

of defeat! They fought back to take the second to 14 and stormed ahead to take the

third to 16.

As always the players gave everything for the team and were tremendously

supportive of each other. They thoroughly deserve the success they have achieved

this season. Thanks also to all the parents for making the trip up to Kent and rooting

for the team all the way.

Team: Tom Barham, Robyn Haysom, Bea Noakes, Will Pieckelon, Amy Radford,

Ben Smith, Molly Thomson and Thomas Wood.
