Sussex 55s team win South East Region League
Our Sussex O55 Masters team have followed up their recent 3rd place at the Masters County Challenge Premier Division, by now winning their South East regional division in the Masters County Championships.
They now go through to the play off, against what is likely to be Essex, for a place in the Masters County Finals Weekend at the end of April.
This is probably the first time in too many years to remember that a Sussex Masters team has got through to the play-offs, demonstrating that Sussex Masters badminton is on the up.
Winning their regional division was sealed on Sunday after a 8-4 away win against Kent. This followed a home win (8-4) against Kent before Xmas, wins against Middlesex (12-0 at home, 11-1 away), and a win and draw against Surrey (9-3 at home and 6-6 away).
The team has benefited from a loyal and bonded team and luckily not too much in the way of injuries or illness. Four men Stewart Byne, Colin Hayhurst, Shahab Hashemi and John Williamson played every match winning between them 55 of 72 rubbers. Just six ladies played across all the matches and picked up 52 of 72 rubbers; Karen Thomas, Minnie Jones, Linda Byne, Wendy Gill, Cathy Bargh and Lynn Levy.
This was truly a team effort where everybody contributed. We wish them well against what is likely to be a strong Essex team on April 8th.
Colin Hayhurst (Captain)
