Sussex U16 v Hampshire on 27 January 2018 in Winchester
Following our success the previous weekend, the Under 16 Sussex team travelled to Winchester to play Hampshire in what was expected to be a very challenging fixture. Hampshire made a predictably strong start by winning all four of the mixed doubles matches.
The Boys’ singles was much more competitive with Henry Wong and Cameron Matthews both winning their matches in two sets whilst Andrew Harrison and Tom Wilkieson narrowing missed out in what were two very exciting and well fought matches.
In the Girls’ singles, Sussex put up a good fight, however, Hampshire proved to be too strong again with Izzy Craig coming the closest to take a set.
In the Boys’ doubles, Henry Wong and Cameron Matthews were victorious in one match and narrowly missed out in the other match having taken the Hampshire pair to a third set. In both of their doubles matches, Andrew Harrison and Rowan Goff narrowly lost some thrilling sets with one hugely entertaining set being scored 26-28.
Finally, in the Girl’s doubles Erin Bradshaw and Yohansa Bandaranayake fought out an epic three setter which ended in them just coming up short in the final set 21-23. In what had been a tough fixture, it was pleasing to end on a positive note with Rebecca Moon and Izzy Craig taking the final match in two sets.
The overall result of 16-4 to Hampshire did not reflect some of the close fought matches and whilst Sussex players were undoubtedly disappointed, there were still plenty of positive to take away from the day. We look forward to our final fixture of the season to be played against Surrey 2 next month.
Well done to all team members for their effort and determination and thank you to all the parents who supported with great enthusiasm and encouragement.
Team members: Yohansa Bandaranayake, Erin Bradshaw, Isabelle Craig, Rowan Goff, Andrew Harrison, Cameron Matthews, Rebecca Moon, Tom Wilkieson and Henry Wong.
