Sussex U16 v Kent on 19 January 2018 at Horsham
The Under 16 Sussex team hosted Kent in an exciting and closely fought match. Sussex took an early lead by winning 3 mixed doubles matches. In the fourth match, Tom Wilkieson and Yohansa Bandaranayake took an early lead to win the first set but were unfortunate to lose out overall.
The singles followed with Andrew Harrison and Cameron Matthews picking up wins for the boys and Rebecca Moon, Izzy Craig and Erin Bradshaw being victorious for the girls. A particular mention should go to Izzy Craig who fought out at epic three setter winning the final set 22-20.
This gave an overall match score of 8-4 to Sussex with just the level doubles matches remaining. However, knowing the strength of Kent’s doubles partnerships, there was no room for Sussex to be complacent. This was born out in some exciting and closely fought matches in both the Boys’ and Girls’ Doubles. Congratulations must go to Rowan Goff who, on his debut for the Under 16 Sussex team, won both of his matches in partnership with Andrew Harrison. Henry Wong and Cameron Matthews won one match in two sets and narrowly lost their second match, losing the second set 20-22, and the third set 19-21. In the Girls’ doubles, Rebecca Moon and Izzy Craig won both their matches to keep Sussex ahead.
In what was always going to be a close match between the 2 counties, Sussex managed to stay ahead throughout and finally triumphed with a hugely satisfying 13-7 victory against stern competition.
Well done to all team members for their effort and determination and thank you to all the parents who supported with great enthusiasm and encouragement.
