Sussex U18’s played brilliantly in their last Shires league fixture of the season, taking several games off a strong Surrey side, but ultimately losing by a respectable 6-14 scoreline.
Robyn Haysom put in her best performance of the season to defeat the Surrey number one in singles. She followed this up with two great doubles wins with partner Eva Craig. It could even have been a clean sweep because in the mixed with partner Thomas Wood they took their opponents to three before finally succumbing.
The other Sussex winners were Scott Haysom and Nicole Wood in the mixed, Eloise Matthews and Bea Noakes in the girls’ doubles and Will Pieckielon with a hard-fought win in the boys’ singles.
Of the twenty matches played as many as seven went to three sets, with Sussex, unfortunately winning only two of the seven, but a great effort against a very strong Surrey side. Thomas Wood took his singles opponent to three before just losing out 24-22. This was preceded by his three setter in the mixed and followed by another three setter in the doubles with partner Luke Davies. Eloise Matthews had an amazingly close three setter in her singles, just losing out in the third 21-19. Scott Haysom and Will Pieckielon also took one doubles match to three.
The final score was Surrey 1’s 14, Sussex 6. This was the U18’s final match of the season before ICT and the team, once again, received great support, advice and encouragement from coach Jonty Russ.
Full team: Bea Noakes, Eva Craig, Luke Davies, Robyn Haysom, Scott Haysom, Eloise Matthews, Will Pieckielon, Nicole Wood and Thomas Wood.
